Gallbladder Removal (Cholecystectomy)

The gallbladder is a saclike organ attached to the liver that stores bile. When we eat a meal, the gallbladder contracts to eject bile into the intestine to help us digest our foods.

Various problems can occur with the gallbladder, with the most common being the development of gallstones. When they form, they can cause :

  • Abdominal pain, usually in the right upper abdomen. This often occurs after a meal and is worse with fatty foods, spicy foods, and dairy products.
  • Indigestion
  • Gassiness
  • Diarhea
  • Back pain

When gallstones form, the treatment involves removal of the gallbladder, usually using a laparoscope (laparoscopic cholecystectomy). This outpatient procedure usually takes less than an hour, and is performed through 4 small incisions on the abdominal wall. The DaVinci surgical robot can also be used, where the gallbladder is removed through a single 2 inch incision at the belly button. Rarely open surgery may be required.

If you have the above symptoms, or know that you have gallstones, call today for your evaluation with Dr. McQuaid.
